A five-month battle with jihadist fighters who captured the southern Philippine city of Marawi ended, the Philippine defense minister said on Monday.
“We are announcing the end of all combat operations in Marawi,” Minister Delfin Lorenzana told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting on regional security issues in Clark, northern Philippines. President Rodrigo Duterte proclaimed last Tuesday that Marawi had been “liberated from the influence of terrorists”, but without a complete halt to the fighting.
