A Spaniard died Monday after police in Rio de Janeiro fired on the tourist vehicle she was in the Rocinha favela, whose driver apparently broke the blockade of the agents after a shootout with traffickers, the military police said.
The woman, whose identity and age were not revealed, was “wounded” and was transferred to the nearby Miguel Couto Hospital, “but she did not resist,” the police confirmed in a brief statement. A source at the Spanish embassy in Brasilia told AFP that the agency “is in contact with local authorities after what happened, but that at the moment they will not make statements.”
