Demonstration to defend the unity of Spain on the eve of a referendum of self-determination convened by the independentists of Catalonia on September 30, 2017 in Madrid
Thousands of people waving Spanish flags demonstrated Saturday in Madrid to defend the unity of Spain on the eve of a referendum of self-determination convened by the independentists of Catalonia despite the ban of the state .
The protesters met in Cibeles Square, in the heart of the capital, at the call of a conservative collective, the Foundation for the defense of the Spanish nation (Denaes), an AFP journalist noted.
Brandishing the national flag red, yellow, red, or wearing it like a cape on the shoulders, they shouted “Catalonia is part of Spain”, refrains of the football fans like “I am Spanish, Spanish, Spanish” or “we will make them”.
Some even cried “Puigdemont in prison”. Carles Puigdemont presides over the separatist regional government of Catalonia, which defies the government and the Spanish justice by holding on Sunday this referendum prohibited because anti-constitutional.
