Champions League: PSG version ‘MCN’ sends a strong signal to Europe
The offensive trio of PSG Neymar-Kylian Mbappé-Edinson Cavani, with Adrien Rabiot, shone against Celtic FC on September 12, 2017 in Glasgow
A goal for Neymar, one for Kylian Mbappé, a double for Edinson Cavani: the line of attack of the Paris SG, the most expensive of the history, did not miss its great debut Tuesday in League of the champions, for the most great misfortune of Celtic Glasgow (5-0).
Scottish club coach Brendan Rodgers warned that “the eyes of the world” will be turned to Celtic Park, where for the first time on the European scene, the trio “MCN”, Mbappé-Cavani- Neymar, for which Paris has disbursed 466 million euros, of which more than 400 this summer (222 for Neymar, 180 for Mbappé).
She did not disappoint and even hit four times: first Neymar launched by Rabiot (19th), then Mbappé on a pass of Neymar (34th), and finally Cavani on penalty then of the head (40th sp, 85th) . The unfortunate Mikael Lustig scored a goal against his side (83 ‘).
– Areola decisive –
If the PSG then managed its lead and Neymar has harvested two clear chances, including a decisive pass ready for Mbappé, he has generally put himself in tune: the Italian Marco Verratti has found his vista, missing since the beginning of the championship, Adrien Rabiot was untenable in the midfield, tight defense.
And, surprisingly, keeper Alphonse Areola, feverish four days earlier against Metz, multiplied the deciding parries, ahead of Leigh Griffiths (22nd), Kieran Tierney (27th), and Scott Sinclair twice (45 + 1, 63rd).
Too easy, by aligning all these millions that have earned the PSG to be targeted by a UEFA investigation? Perhaps, but the match still looked like a little trap.
Firstly because the PSG, because of this historical recruitment, faced a lot of expectations and was obliged to succeed in his match. Then, because Celtic, far from his glorious years – this year he celebrates his fiftieth anniversary of the 1967 Champion Clubs’ Cup – remains a team accustomed to continental jousting.
– Mbappé extinguishes the furnace –
Finally, because the Celtic Park, which the fans of the club have renamed “Paradise”, is a furnace on the evenings of European games. The 1,400 Parisian fans present for the match held up the comparison until half an hour before the kick-off, when the Scots preferred the lukewarmness of the bars to the cold of the stands. But until the last minutes of the game, nothing to do.
The hymn of the club, the famous “You’ll never walk alone” shared with Liverpool or Borussia Dortmund, was beautiful to cry and that of the Champions League made the stadium roar from start to finish. Only the second goal of Paris, that of Mbappé, silenced the Scottish public.
Another reason for the PSG’s ease is the fact that Neymar’s early score, which scored his 5th goal in five matches with PSG (plus five assists) in the configuration it prefers.
When he dropped the pressure by scoring quickly and can monopolize the ball, patiently waiting for the opponents to leave holes in their defense, it is difficult to move.
His performance therefore demands confirmation in the face of a more prominent opposition, for example on the following day, at the Parc des Princes against Bayern Munich.
